The upcoming expedition is part of a multi-year collaborative effort to restore deep-sea habitats in the Gulf of Mexico that were injured by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history.

On September 10-11, the Mokupāpapa Discovery Center and NOAA Ocean Exploration will host Pilina Kai Lipo: Connecting to the Deep Ocean, an ocean-themed event at the center designed to engage the local community with the deep ocean by highlighting efforts to further our understanding of the waters of Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument.

Throughout the 2024 fall semester, students in Joanna Goger’s senior capstone research class at the University of Maryland, College Park, worked with Sarah Groves and Logan Kline to review marine plastic policies in four distinct geographical regions and analyze the effectiveness of policies within those regions.

Evidence of marine debris pollution in the deep sea has continued to mount as expeditions explore more regions of the ocean. New imagery collected during expeditions led by NOAA Ocean Exploration and partners adds to these findings by revealing widespread plastic, metal, and glass debris in deep waters of the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean sea.
