This vicious looking viperfish (Chauliodus sp.) was seen in Hydrographer Canyon during NOAA Ocean Exploration’s 2021 North Atlantic Stepping Stones: New England and Corner Rise Seamounts expedition on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer. With transparent, needle-like teeth and a hinged-jaw that enables it to catch prey almost half its size, the viperfish is a ferocious predator.
