Split-beam sonar provides us with information about the size and location of underwater objects. It’s particularly useful for detecting marine life and gas seeps in the water column. During the 2026 Mapping Shakedown, Mission Team members spent 18 hours calibrating the ship’s split-beam sonars using the equipment shown here to ensure the accuracy of the data collected.
