January 31, 2021: Scientists

Océano Profundo 2018: Exploring Deep-sea Habitats off Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands expedition science leads Stacey Williams and Steve Auscavitch at the helm in the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer control room. While Stacey and Steve were on the ship and narrated all of the live dives, scientists from around the world also participated in the dives, tuning in primarily via the internet to help identify animals and geologic features and decide where to go and what samples to collect. These shore-side scientists were able to join Stacey and Steve thanks to telepresence technology, which uses a high-bandwidth satellite communications system to transmit mapping and oceanographic data and real-time, high-definition video feeds to shore.
