Sponge and Amphipods
At least six distinct species of sponges were observed during the sixth dive of the 2026 American Samoa ROV + Mapping Exploration expedition, including this carnivorous sponge with two amphipods attached to its stalk. Unlike filter feeding sponges, carnivorous sponges prey on animals such as small crustaceans that they capture from the water column.
