This siphonophore, in the family Stephanomiidae, was seen at a depth of 1,531 meters (almost one mile) while exploring an unnamed seamount in the U.S. and Kiribati Exclusive Economic Zones during 2017’s Discovering the Deep: Exploring Remote Pacific Marine Protected Areas. Siphonophores appear to be a single organism, but they are actually colonies of individual hydrozoans, each specialized for different functions such as swimming, feeding, and reproduction.
