LST-884 Stern Bridge Structure
Part of the stern bridge of landing ship tank LST-884 showing a “trophy board.” Three Japanese flags and a Japanese aircraft emblem — the red circles on the white wing to the right — represent the three kamikazes downed by LST-884 during the invasion of Okinawa in April 1945. The last of the three aircraft went down in flames, crippling the ship. All three flags and the symbol were visible when the wreck was first located by the Hawaiʻi Undersea Research Laboratory in 2014. Twelve years later, during Dive 03 of the 2025 ROV and Mapping expedition, accretions had completely obscured one of the flags.
