November 29, 2020: Sea Cucumber

During the fifth dive of the Discovering the Deep: Exploring Remote Pacific Marine Protected Areas expedition, the team explored Polo Seamount in the Tokelau Seamount Chain. This was the third expedition dive within the Phoenix Islands Protected Area at depths ranging from 1,834 to 2,134 meters (6,017 to 7,001 feet). Throughout the dive, scientists observed a diversity of life -- from sea urchins, cup corals, and xenophyophores to shrimp, tripod fish and rattails, corals, and even sea cucumbers, such as the one pictured here.
