This faceless cusk eel was seen during Dive 06 of the 2026 Cook Islands ROV Exploration cruise. This fish gets its common name from the fact that it appears to hardly have a face. Its mouth is on the underside of its head, but it lacks visible eyes. It navigates through the water using two pairs of large nostrils on the front of its head. The scientific name for these fish, Typhlonus nasus, translates from Greek and Latin to mean a large-nosed, blind hake.
