This batfish (Halicmetus niger) was seen at a depth of 1,102 meters (3,615 feet) on a seamount in the Jarvis Island Unit of the Pacific Islands Heritage Marine National Monument during the Mountains in the Deep: Exploring the Central Pacific Basin. Anglerfish in the family Ogcocephalidae, like this individual, are called batfish because of how their broad pectoral fins spread outward from their flat bodies and look like bat wings.
