Bobtail Squid
With its arms and fins tucked below its body, this adorable bobtail squid was seen at a depth of 552 meters (1,811 feet) in Baltimore Canyon on the Mid-Atlantic continental shelf during the Windows to the Deep 2019: Exploration of the Deep-Sea Habitats of the Southeast United States expedition. These cephalopods are small, generally no bigger than a golf ball, and despite their common name, they aren’t actually squids.
