Explorers

Andrew Thurber

Andrew Thurber

Assistant Professor of Oceanography and Microbiology - Oregon State University

Andrew is an Assistant Professor of Oceanography and Microbiology at Oregon State University. His research is focused on understanding ocean ecosystem function including more than a decade studying methane seeps. Andrew obtained his B.S. at Hawai’i Pacific University, M.Sc. at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, and Ph.D. from Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the University California, San Diego.

Kerry McPhail

Kerry McPhail

Professor of Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry - College of Pharmacy at Oregon State University

Kerry is a Professor of Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry in the College of Pharmacy at Oregon State University. Her research is focused on purifying and describing new natural product compounds from marine organisms that may be useful for studying or treating chronic and infectious diseases. Kerry obtained her B.S. in chemistry and marine biology, and Ph.D. in marine natural products chemistry from Rhodes University in South Africa.

Susie Cummings

Susie Cummings

Ph.D. Student - Oregon State University

Susie is a Ph.D. student in microbiology at Oregon State University, currently studying in Dr. Thurber’s lab. Her research interests include the ecological interactions between microbes, fauna, and the environment and the role of different chemical compounds in these interactions. Susie studied at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at University of California - San Diego and obtained a B.S. in Biochemistry and Cell Biology and an M.S. in Biology.

Lila Ardor Bellucci

Lila Ardor Bellucci

Ph.D. Student - Oregon State University

Lila is an incoming Ph.D. student in Ocean, Earth, and Atmospheric Science in Dr. Thurber’s lab at Oregon State University. She is planning to research the diversity of microbes, fauna, and valuable ecosystem functions made possible by the mosaic of habitats that exist between seeps and the background deep sea. As sources of blue economy in the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone become increasingly important, Lila hopes to conduct research that will better inform future management of seep habitats.

George Neuhaus

George Neuhaus

Postdoctoral Researcher - Oregon State University

George is a postdoctoral researcher in the McPhail Lab. George obtained his PhD in Organic Chemistry from OSU in the lab of Professor Sandra Loesgen, where he isolated and characterized the chemical structures and biological activities of natural products from fungi.
