Discovering Deep Sea Corals of the Phoenix Islands

Exploration for Educators

Exploration for Educators are designed to share the excitement of daily at-sea discoveries and the science behind major ocean exploration initiatives supported by NOAA with educators, students, and the public around the world.

The Discovering Deep-Sea Corals of the Phoenix Islands expedition aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute ’s (SOI’s) R/V Falkor  expands on a March 2017 exploration by NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer and offers a unique opportunity for explorers of all ages to investigate this remote and virtually untouched area of the deep Pacific Ocean.

As an educator, you might choose to learn more about why NOAA and SOI are exploring this particular deep-ocean area, what advanced technologies are being used, and what explorers are hoping to find. You might also be looking to learn more about the explorers themselves so your students more fully understand what skills and expertise are required for various careers in ocean exploration. To support and enable educators in designing their own instructional strategies for classrooms around particular expeditions, live and recorded video, lessons, multimedia tools, and a wealth of other resources related to this expedition are compiled here.
