During the 2015 Hohonu Moana: Exploring Deepwaters off Hawaiʻi expedition in Papahānaumokuākea, a team aboard NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer discovered the largest sponge ever found. The sponge, which was about the size of a minivan, was documented at a depth of 2,130 meters using remotely operated vehicles Deep Discoverer and Seirios.
