Black Coral
A black coral (Umbellapathes helioanthes) seen at 546 meters (1,791 feet) in depth on Penguin Bank during Dive 04 of the 2025 ROV and Mapping Shakedown expedition. A rare species and characteristic of the site — a general slope south of Penguin Bank and outside Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuaries — this individual was extensively imaged and collected for further research.
