Happy National Friendship Day! We initially spotted an anglerfish in the genus Chaunacops swimming just above the seafloor during a dive off the coast of Halifax during the Deep Connections 2019: Exploring Atlantic Canyons and Seamounts of the United States and Canada expedition (check out video of the fish). As it neared the seafloor, it had a close encounter with a grendair, or rattail fish. So while they probably aren’t exactly “friends,” it is always interesting (and important) to have the opportunity to observe animal interactions in the deep ocean.
