This pink coral observed at a depth of approximately 1,654 meters (5,427 feet) had a base approximately 18 centimeters (7 inches) wide, indicating a particularly old colony. It was seen while exploring Mendelssohn Seamount as part of the Deep-Sea Symphony: Exploring the Musicians Seamounts expedition. Mendelssohn Seamount had some of the most high-density coral communities of any area that NOAA Ocean Exploration explored during the three years of the CAPSTONE expeditions. Watch a video from the dive.
