This long-armed squid, Chiroteuthis veranyi, was imaged at a depth of approximately 1,400 meters (4,593 feet) while exploring Hudson Canyon as part of the 2021 ROV Shakedown expedition.

At the start of any major exploration period, NOAA Ocean Exploration dedicates a series of days at sea to "shake down" and test the readiness of the ship's mission systems and the remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). This particular expedition focused on taking ROVs Deep Discoverer and Seirios on a series of progressively deeper dives on increasingly complex topography to test the brand new ROV control system, thruster motors, motor controllers, and hydraulic system on Deep Discoverer as well as new science and navigation instruments that were added to Deep Discoverer during the offseason.
