In July and August of 2021, an interdisciplinary team of researchers supported by NOAA Ocean Exploration and led by NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries conducted autonomous survey and exploration of the Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary and the proposed Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary as part of the Maritime Heritage in America’s Inland Seas expedition. Collected data will be used to characterize lakebed habitat and identify submerged maritime heritage resources such as shipwrecks. The schooner Walter B. Allen, pictured here, is one of 36 historic shipwrecks in the Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary.
