On April 15, 1912, RMS Titanic, a British passenger liner operated by the White Star Line, sunk in the North Atlantic Ocean after striking an iceberg. In June 2003, the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research sponsored an 11-day research expedition to the site of the Titanic wreck aboard the Russian Research Vessel Akademik Mstislav Keldysh. The vessel was equipped with two three-person submersibles (Mir I and Mir II) capable of diving to depths of 6,000 meters (19,685 feet); the depth of the Titanic is 3,800 meters (12,467 feet). This image shows a view of the Titanic’s bow from a camera mounted on the outside of the Mir I submersible.
