During the Hidden Ocean 2016: Chukchi Borderlands expedition, scientists collected mud from the seafloor in order to study the Arctic’s infauna, which are the organisms that live in the sediments on the ocean floor. Although often small and hidden in the mud, these organisms are an important part of marine ecosystems. In this image, Leah Sloan sieves through a muddy box core sample, separating the sediment from the animals.
