We encountered this whiplash squid (Magnoteuthis magna) at a depth of 1,310 meters (4,300 feet) while exploring a canyon off the coast of Virginia during the Windows to the Deep 2019 expedition. This species is quite common below 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) along the Northeastern coast of the United States and feeds by extending its two long tentacles as it drifts along with the current.
