Severed from the rest of the ship during the November 1942 Battle of Tassafaronga, USS New Orleans’ bow was found in the Iron Bottom Sound and explored for the first time at a depth of approximately 675 meters (2,215 feet) during the Maritime Archaeology of Guadalcanal: Iron Bottom Sound expedition on Exploration Vessel Nautilus.
