EX2503 Summary
On May 5, 2025, NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer arrived in Honolulu, Hawai'i, following the successful completion of the Beyond the Blue: Papahānaumokuākea ROV and Mapping expedition. During the expedition, we explored numerous seamounts, the water column, and the wreck of USS Yorktown (CV-5). We observed animals previously unknown to science, animals in places they haven’t been seen before, animals behaviors we hadn’t seen previously, and exciting geological formations. Our dives took us to depths greater than 5,000 meters (3 miles) and as shallow as 370 meters (1,210 feet). And when not diving, we collected valuable mapping data, filling gaps in existing bathymetry in the region.
The data collected during this expedition will raise overall knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of deep ocean waters in the Pacific Islands region so that we can better manage and use these waters and the resources that they hold.
