July 24, 2021: Calm Seas

Along the way, the team encountered water so calm, it looked more like a painting than reality, making it hard to believe that the nearest land was more than 400 nautical miles away.

The first dive site for the Deepwater Wonders of Wake: Exploring the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument expedition on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer was rather far away, and the first two days of the expedition were spent mapping while in transit to the site. Along the way, the team encountered water so calm, it looked more like a painting than reality, making it hard to believe that the nearest land was more than 400 nautical miles away.
