This image shows the intricate arms of a basket star, imaged during the fourth dive of the 2016 Hohonu Moana: Exploring Deep Waters off Hawaiʻi expedition to explore a headwall scarp on the north side of Pioneer Bank. Basket stars are close relatives of brittle stars and feed by perching in an elevated position and extending their arms in a net-like fashion perpendicular to the current to catch small crustaceans, jellyfish, and other small animals that come within reach.
