January 4, 2021: Shrimp

This shrimp was seen swimming in the water column during an exploration transect at a depth of 800 meters (2,625 feet) at the end of a 2016 Deepwater Exploration of the Marianas expedition dive. The shrimp had very long antennae! Long antennae like this are not uncommon in the deep sea, as they help to increase the area around which an animal can sense, which is important in the deep sea where there is little to no light for seeing.
