August 31, 2020: American Lobster

An American lobster (Homarus americanus) eating a squid during a dive on a shallow (306 to 358-meter/1,004 to 1,175-foot) soft-bottom area off Canada on August 31, 2019, as part of the Deep Connections 2019 expedition. Seeing a lobster eating a squid begged the question as to how would a lobster catch a squid? Scientists theorize that the lobster was feasting on what was likely the result of cannibalism during overly enthusiastic (or sloppy) feeding on the part of squid in the water column.
