Light from a Triton submersible reveals that fish occupy both the structure of German U-boat U-576 and the water column above. U-576 was sunk on July 15, 1942, off the coast of North Carolina by U.S. forces.

In 2016, NOAA’s Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, in partnership with the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, Project Baseline, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, University of North Carolina Coastal Studies Institute, and SRI International conducted a 15-day expedition to survey World War II shipwrecks from the Battle of the Atlantic, including U-576.
