July 16, 2020: Garden of Algae

Calcified green algae are important to the biogeochemical cycles of coral reefs. In this garden of algae imaged during the Cuba’s Twilight Zone Reefs and Their Regional Connectivity expedition, scientists saw three species of the calcified green alga Halimeda, as well as Udotea and Rhipocephalus. During the expedition, the team was able to identify interesting patterns of distribution of algae at different depths and also established new depth records for species for the region.
