  3. Area of Exploration (jpg, 277 Kb)
Area of ocean exploration north of Sulawesi, near the Sangihe-Talaud island chains. Image courtesy ofNOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, INDEX-SATAL 2010.
  4. Okeanos Explorer Control Room (jpg, 416 Kb)
NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer Control Room while ROV operations are underway. Image courtesy ofNOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, INDEX-SATAL 2010.
  5. Carnivorous Sponge (jpg, 2.1 Mb)
This looks like a flower in a garden but scientists think this is likely a sponge - probably a "carnivorous sponge". The ROV imaged this at approximately 1,000 meters deep. Image courtesy ofNOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, INDEX-SATAL 2010.
  6. Octopus (jpg, 1.9 Mb)
This octopus was imaged at approximatey 1600 meters deep by the high-definition cameras on the ROV. Image courtesy ofNOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, INDEX-SATAL 2010.
  7. Partnership (jpg, 5.2 Mb)
Co-Principal Investigators Steve Hammond (left) and Sugiarta Wirasantosa (right) are in Jakarta's Exploration Command Center welcoming those at sea onboard NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer to Indonesian waters. During the course of the expedition, telepresence technology brought live images from the ship to scientists ashore via satellite and high-speed Internet pathways. Image courtesy ofNOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, INDEX-SATAL 2010.
  8. Little Hercules ROV (jpg, 1.6 Mb)
The Institute for Exploration's Little Hercules ROV, operated by NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer, nears active hydrothermal vent sites on the summit of Kawio Barat submarine volcano. Image courtesy ofNOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, INDEX-SATAL 2010.

Selected Video and Animation

  1. Google Earth Virtual Tour
NOAA and Google entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement to increase access and reach of NOAA data through the expertise and innovative tools at Google. This map and its products are a result of collaboration between NOAA and Google and establish a foundation for improving data and product integration and access. Video courtesy of Google,NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, INDEX-SATAL 2010.
  2. 2010 AGU Conference Presentation Video
An eight minute summary of INDEX 2010, this video provides an introduction to the Indonesia-USA partnership, and focuses heavily on spectacular benthic footage of the highly biodiverse Sangihe Talaud region, spanning the course of the expedition. Video courtesy ofNOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, INDEX-SATAL 2010.

  3. Kawio Barat Highlight Video
This video shows just some of the stunning imagery captured by the high definition cameras on the Little Hercules ROV during the vehicle's dives down to Kawio Barat submarine volcano. During the descent to the location where plumes were discovered the previous day, the ROV encounters white plumes of warm sulphur-rich water and follows the plumes to their vent source amongst volcanic rock. Shrimp and limpets live among the strands of yellow and black sulphur, and feed on the bacteria that grow near the vents. Video courtesy ofNOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, INDEX-SATAL 2010.
  4. Kawio Barat Animated Fly-Through
An animated fly-through of the volcano Kawio Barat: (West Kawio), created from data obtained from the multibeam sonar on NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer. Animation courtesy ofNOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, INDEX-SATAL 2010.
  5. INDEX 2010 Exploration Highlight Video
Cameras on the ROV operated by NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer (the Institute of Exploration's "Little Hercules" ROV) and cameras on an accompanying camera sled that operates with the ROV, obtained these images on this video sequence.
