Professional Development: Archive of Previous Sessions
The professional development offerings listed here include opportunities for teachers and other educators to engage in learning more about ocean exploration. Opportunities will focus on how educators can use the mathematics, science, and technology associated with exploring the oceans in their classrooms to help increase awareness and understanding of the ocean world. These offerings are designed to introduce educators to premiere ocean scientists/explorers and their research and explorations, and at the same time, provide exemplary tools and resources to engage students in ocean exploration by bringing the classroom closer to the ocean than it has ever been before.
Because science teaching methods are rapidly changing, technology will play a central role in these offerings and will help educators teach about the oceans in new and exciting ways. Through these professional development opportunities, educators will discover new tools and resources and learn how to effectively use them in the teaching of state and national standards.

NOAA Ocean Exploration Professional Development Workshop II for teachers who participated in the initial June 2004 Ocean Exploration Professional Development Workshop
Join educators during this follow-up session to the introductory professional development session on Learning Ocean Science through Ocean Exploration, a curriculum developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA's) Office of Ocean Exploration. In addition to conducting inquiry- and standards-based activities tied directly to ocean expeditions, you will have the opportunity to share your experiences with the use of the Ocean Exploration website and curriculum, participate in a guided tour of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary exhibit at the Aquarium, and interact with scientists to learn about their research and ocean exploration experiences. Dr. Robert Carney, Professor at Louisiana University, has been conducting research of deep Gulf of Mexico ecology, including chemosynthetic communities, for the past 20 years. Dr. Jack Irion, Minerals Management Service Marine Archaeologist, was involved with wrecks discovered in the Gulf of Mexico, including a German submarine U-166 found in 5,000 feet of water and an early 19th century wooden-hulled sailing ship found in 2,650 feet of water. Dr. Shelia Brown, Scientist and Coordinator of Educational Programs and Centers for Ocean Sciences Education: Central Gulf of Mexico (COSEE:CGOM), has been involved with marine and ocean sciences education programs for K-12, undergraduate/graduate students, and teacher workshops/institutes for 25 years.

NOAA Ocean Exploration Professional Development Workshop for science teachers in grades 6-12
From bioluminescent corals to deep vent worms, from tropical underwater volcanoes to the Arctic Ocean floor, we know more about the Moon than our ocean. Bring the excitement of current ocean science discoveries to your students using the Ocean Exploration Curriculum, and a companion CD-ROM of the Ocean Explorer Web site from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Join Dr. Valerie Chase, Biologist and Science Education Consultant formerly with the National Aquarium in Baltimore, and Cindy Renkas, Education Specialist for NOAA Ocean Exploration, as you do inquiry- and standards-based activities tied directly to ocean expeditions. Receive a copy of the Learning Ocean Science through Ocean Exploration curriculum and CD-ROM’s interpreting these multidisciplinary ocean discovery voyages using “new technological eyes” to study life and earth science on the ocean floor. Use these inquiry-based activities in biology, earth, physical, and marine science courses to connect your students to the excitement of NOAA Ocean Exploration as they travel from the Galapagos Rift to the Arctic Ocean, from Alaskan and New England seamounts to those in the Hawaiian Islands.

Professional Development in Learning Ocean Science through Ocean Exploration Curriculum, Grades 6-12
From bioluminescent corals to deep vent worms, from tropical underwater volcanoes to the Arctic Ocean floor, we know more about the Moon than our ocean. Bring the excitement of current ocean science discoveries to your students using this Ocean Exploration Curriculum, and a companion CD-ROM of the Ocean Explorer Web site from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Join Dr. Valerie Chase, Biologist and Science Education Consultant formerly with the National Aquarium in Baltimore, and Paula Keener-Chavis, National Education Coordinator for NOAA Ocean Exploration, as you do inquiry- and standards-based activities tied directly to ocean expeditions described on the CD-ROM by ocean science explorers. Receive a copy of the curriculum and CD-ROM interpreting these multidisciplinary ocean discovery voyages using “new technological eyes” to study life and earth science on the ocean floor. Ocean scientists share their explorations directly with your students, clearly articulating the excitement of scientific discovery. Activities written and tested by scientists and educators enable your students to model ocean science exploration in your classroom. Use these inquiry-based exercises in biology, earth or marine science courses to connect your students to the excitement of NOAA Ocean Exploration as they travel from the Galapagos Rift to the Arctic Ocean, from Alaskan seamounts to those in the Hawaiian Islands.

Our human assumption that everything sees the way we see has affected descriptions of animal interactions. This professional development workshop presents a unique opportunity to engage explorers of all ages as we look deep into the ocean with new eyes to reveal new organisms, behaviors, visual adaptations, and fluorescent compounds. Deploying a unique deep-sea observatory camera system to observe as unobtrusively as possible, an international team of scientists aboard the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute’s research vessel Seward Johnson will expand upon the exciting discoveries of the 2004 Deep Scope exploration to further examine the deep-sea environment in the Gulf of Mexico from the perspective of the animals living there. Examining fluorescence as a major mechanism of visual communication between organisms at intermediate depths, studying the “breaking” of the ultimate camouflage of invisibility with the ability to see polarized light, examining the visual physiology and optics of deep-sea invertebrates, and determining whether deep-sea organisms are being blinded by exposure to brightly lit submersibles and ROV’s are some of the major goals of the Deep Scope 2005 mission.
In-person presentations by Deep Scope expedition scientists Dr. Tamara Frank and Dr. Edith Widder will be featured during this workshop. Hands-on activities taken from lesson plans for students in grades 5-12 and developed specifically for this expedition and exploration of the award-winning NOAA Ocean Exploration Web site will be facilitated by Cindy Renkas, NOAA Ocean Exploration Education Specialist. All Ocean Exploration lesson plans are tied to the National Science Education Standards and focus on cutting-edge ocean exploration and research using state-of-the-art technologies. Take-home materials including lesson plans, CD ROM’s, and posters; a Certificate of Participation; and a gift certificate will be provided to each participant. A continental breakfast and lunch are also provided. Inservice credits for St. Lucie and Indian River County School Districts are available.
