Octocorals Metallogorgia sp. (center) and Paramuricea sp. (lower left)

This phylogenetic tree shows the relationships among coral species from three families (Chrysogorgiidae, Primnoidae, Coralliidae) based on DNA sequences of the msh1 gene. The longer the branch separating corals, the greater the genetic divergence between them. Names are color coded based on sampling location: orange = Kelvin Seamount; blue = Manning Seamount; brown = Muir Seamount; red = Bear Seamount; green = Gulf of Maine/Georges Bank canyons; purple = Charleston Bump (Islands in the Stream 2001); black = Pacific Ocean.
