The Pisces V dives at Macauley volcano were made on the youngest cone, which has a deep crater at the top. The dominant species at hydrothermal vents on the outer flanks of the cone were vast beds of mussels with hoards of starfish feeding on them. Inside the cone, flatfish were prevalent in diffusely venting areas.
