The two long hooked reefs off Northwest Point caught both the US Brig Chippewa (1816) and the US Schooner Onkahye (1848).

The two long hooked reefs off Northwest Point caught both the U.S. brig Chippewa (in 1816) and the U.S. schooner Onkahye (in 1848). This area is well known as a ship "trap" and has claimed dozens of ships over the centuries. By the time navigators realized they had made a mistake, the prevailing easterly wind and waves made it nearly impossible to escape. Image courtesy of Google Earth.
