releasing an Otter trawl

An Otter trawl is one of the devices being used to sample the ocean floor. Here, the science team prepares to release the net from the R/V Seward Johnson. The two wooden boards attached to the net are called spreaders. They keep the mouth of the net open as it is pulled along the ocean bottom. Image courtesy of Islands in the Sea 2002, NOAA/OER.
