box core sampling device

The Box Core is a sampling device used to collect large amounts of sediment. However, unlike the push cores, these samples are not from specific locations at the sample site. Therefore, researchers use this sediment sample to provide a reference point for the data collected on-site. Image courtesy of Gulf of Mexico 2002, NOAA/OER.
