side scan sonar image of the Pewabic

In 1865, the Pewabic collided with her sister ship the Meteor while both vessels had drawn close together in order to pass messeges and packages, a common place practice during those times. Only fifty passengers out of the 180 were rescued. She is one of Thunder Bay's most famous shipwrecks, since she was carrying a 200 ton cargo of copper. At least five divers perished while attempting to salvage the wreck due to the great depth, 52 meters, of her final resting place.
