EX Instant Messaging Service and Eventlog

This section contains information related to using the Okeanos Explorer Program's Instant Messaging Service and the Okeanos Explorer Eventlog.

The EX jabber server allows ship-board and shore-based personnel to communicate via instant messaging (IM). The Eventlog is the one example of how the IM service is used. The purpose of the Eventlog is to host a centralized collaboration location where ship-based and shore-based personnel can communicate about operations being conducted in real-time aboard the ship. The Eventlog is a group chat room enabling geographically distributed users to comment on data feeds being streamed live from aboard the Okeanos Explorer to shore-based Exploration Command Centers in a centralized way.

Comments, discussions and requests made in the “eventlog” group chat room are logged and provided a timestamp (GMT) and can later be correlated to the operations, location, and data feeds coming off the ship at that time. Thus, the chat server facilitates the first-order annotation of activities happening on a cruise, serving as a digital version of scientists’ daily logs and enabling input from multiple users.

Participating in the Eventlog
The Eventlog serves as the digital equivalent to the scientist's daily logbook. It is used by shipboard and shore side cruise participants to log real-time observations on a variety of topics. The Eventlog is simply a recorded, time stamped, chat room that allow all participating researchers to add observations. This document outlines recommended practices when contributing to the Event log to maximize it's usefulness.

Dive Codes
The Dive Codes are the shorthand used in the Eventlog to provide the observers with a standard vocabulary and assist the observers with making observations more quickly.
