ROPOS sampling a carbonate chimney

ROPOS samples a carbonate chimney, taken from the vicinity of one of the pockmarks on dive R609, in 275 meters of water. The high-resolution bathymetry/backscatter imagery enabled us to find these small features (usually about 200 meters in diameter). These carbonates are thought to be precipitated from fluid flow in this area to the west of the bank. Image courtesy of Lewis and Clark 2001, NOAA/OER.
