scanning electron image Melosira arctica with ephytic diatoms

Light microscopical image of Arctic ice diatoms: Melosira arctica with ephytic diatoms. Unicelluar algae are the main primary producers in sea ice. More than 200 diatom species are known to grow in Arctic ice. Melosira arctica may grow within the brine channels but also attaches to the bottom of the ice floes.
