Installed on remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Deep Discoverer in 2021, the BlueView scanning sonar system helps us detect objects beyond the reach of the ROVs’ lights, helping us to avoid hazardous situations and guiding us to previously known and unknown objects of interest. During the 2022 ROV and Mapping Shakedown, we used the new system to guide us to a target provided by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management and SEARCH Inc. The image here shows the remains of a19th century whaler, including what is clearly an anchor.
