WEBVTT 00:00:00.063 --> 00:00:03.083 So this is a really interesting interaction here. We have an 00:00:03.083 --> 00:00:06.803 urchin that's been climbing up this tall bamboo whip coral and 00:00:06.803 --> 00:00:09.503 you can see below the urchin, it's all what we called denuded, 00:00:09.503 --> 00:00:12.323 it so all of the living material has been stripped off 00:00:12.323 --> 00:00:15.623 of it and up above it, the bamboo is still alive and so 00:00:15.623 --> 00:00:19.103 the suspicion is this urchin started at the bottom and has 00:00:19.103 --> 00:00:22.283 been munching its way up the top of this uh this bamboo 00:00:22.283 --> 00:00:27.803 coral. Really interesting observation, Rhian. Um I'm I'm kinda 00:00:27.803 --> 00:00:31.963 shocked actually. I wasn't convinced that the Echinus 00:00:31.963 --> 00:00:35.143 were feeding on some of these bamboos that we've seen them on 00:00:35.143 --> 00:00:39.763 but boy, this sure looks like what's been going on. I think 00:00:39.763 --> 00:00:44.203 this urchin has been caught red handed in fact. Yeah. And you 00:00:44.203 --> 00:00:46.843 can see the polyps very close to it are all retracted and 00:00:46.843 --> 00:00:48.943 further up there a little bit more out so you can see those 00:00:48.943 --> 00:00:51.883 sharp spines. So this urchin must be able to get around 00:00:51.883 --> 00:00:55.903 those sharp spines, it doesn't seem to affect it whatsoever. I 00:00:55.903 --> 00:00:58.243 was gonna say that does not appear to be much of a 00:00:58.243 --> 00:01:02.203 defensive mechanism from what I'm seeing here. And um I feel 00:01:02.203 --> 00:01:04.783 like a defense lawyer for this urchin. I keep trying to make 00:01:04.783 --> 00:01:08.203 excuses for it but this sure looks like a smoking gun. It 00:01:08.203 --> 00:01:11.263 does. It does. It's a great interaction to have filmed. Thanks 00:01:11.263 --> 00:01:14.163 so much pilots.
