WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.463 Good morning, deep sea explorers. I'd like to welcome 00:00:02.463 --> 00:00:06.243 you to dive eighteen of the NOAA Ocean Expedition, North 00:00:06.243 --> 00:00:09.483 Atlantic Stepping Stones and today, our stepping stone is 00:00:09.483 --> 00:00:13.743 "Asterina" Seamount. So, we have just landed on the bottom 00:00:13.743 --> 00:00:20.643 of 3,789 meters. Oh, beautiful. This is actually a sea pen. Uh 00:00:20.643 --> 00:00:23.043 that was a little bit unexpected. So, these sea pens 00:00:23.043 --> 00:00:25.983 are uh cnidarians so they're related to corals and anemones 00:00:25.983 --> 00:00:29.223 and uh they tend to have an anchor. You can see that white 00:00:29.223 --> 00:00:31.323 base at the bottom is called a peduncle and they have an 00:00:31.323 --> 00:00:34.023 anchor into the sediments. There must be at least a bit of 00:00:34.023 --> 00:00:37.023 sediment if between these cracks here. This actually 00:00:37.023 --> 00:00:41.163 looks like another C pen um and so I wonder if this is uh well 00:00:41.163 --> 00:00:43.563 this one almost certainly is a rock pen. You can see very 00:00:43.563 --> 00:00:47.223 clearly that this one is uh attached to the rock there and 00:00:47.223 --> 00:00:49.623 this is uh pretty unusual. It's very unusual to see these rock 00:00:49.623 --> 00:00:53.643 pens. Um most seapens have an anchor that anchors into the 00:00:53.643 --> 00:00:56.043 sediment but these rock pens actually have more of a sucker 00:00:56.043 --> 00:00:59.583 on the bottom and attached to the side of rocks. And uh we've 00:00:59.583 --> 00:01:02.343 been hearing through the chat room that this actually would 00:01:02.343 --> 00:01:08.003 be the the deepest uh record of a rock pen in the Atlantic and 00:01:08.003 --> 00:01:10.823 you can see that uh inner skeleton, that pen in the middle 00:01:10.823 --> 00:01:14.423 kinda comes all the way down to the base and ends uh in this 00:01:14.423 --> 00:01:18.263 peduncle this kind of sucker on the bottom so this is a 00:01:18.263 --> 00:01:21.683 really unusual find this is uh the deepest record of a rock 00:01:21.683 --> 00:01:26.923 pen in the Atlantic. Just beautiful.
