The Ocean Knows No Boundaries

During the Deep-Sea Symphony expedition, the team explored waters within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone as well as waters outside U.S. jurisdiction, in waters known as the "high seas." Covering nearly 45 percent of the Earth's surface, the high seas are open ocean and seabed areas that fall outside of any country's maritime jurisdiction. One thought to be barren, we now know that high seas harbor great biodiversity. Given that the ocean – and the life it sustains – do not follow human-drawn boundaries, it is increasingly important for us to build an understanding of all aspects of ocean, to better manage and protect its resources.
