The Deep Discoverer remotely operated vehicle encountered this snailfish (or Liparid) while exploring Keathley Canyon at a depth of ~ 2,000 meters. The rat-like tail on the fish is common amongst deep-sea fishes, as it is believed to keep water movement to a minimum, thus helping to prevent detection by other animals in the water.
