Ocean Art at Home: Color a Seascape with Patrick Ching
Take a deeper look at some of the wonders of our deep-ocean seascapes and the unique marine life that resides within them through a new series of artistic resources created by natural history artist Patrick Ching. Born and raised in Hawai’i, Patrick is passionate about educating others about native Hawaiian wildlife through art and making the world a more beautiful place by helping people unleash their inner artist.
Patrick was a key partner in NOAA Ocean Exploration’s fall port event at the Mokupāpapa Discovery Center, where he led classes on how to paint and draw deep-sea creatures based on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer imagery captured in Papahānaumokuākea National Marine Monument and the surrounding region. For the event, he created three coloring pages celebrating the monument and the wonder of exploration. To learn more about each image — and to see their real-life counterparts — check out these videos introducing “Casper” the octopus, armored searobins, or an artistic rendition combining a community of corals and brightly colored brisingid seastars with an imagined shipwreck in the distance.
