The Orpheus autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) was developed with support from NOAA and built to explore abyssal depths up to 6,000 meters (3.7 miles). It was field tested from Exploration Vessel Nautilus on abyssal plain habitats in the Mariana region at depths of 5,600-5,700 meters (approximately 3.5 miles) during the Mattingan: Mariana Arc Volcanic Exploration expedition.
