Plate sponges in the family Corallistidae were common near the Flower Garden Banks and were collected for further analysis on the Exploring the Blue Economy Biotechnology Potential of Deepwater Habitats expedition. Certain species in this family are known to produce pharmaceutically relevant compounds.
