coral mound
A narrated compilation of still photographs from a dive
conducted by Byron White (South Carolina Department of Natural Resources).
The submersible's video camera did not work during this dive.
The photo essay begins with a squat lobster (Lauriea
siagiani), then bamboo coral (family Isididae). The
golden crab (Chaceon fenneri) is a federally managed
species, so it is of commercial importance. The sea floor
at this particular dive site was covered almost entirely
with coral rubble (skeletons), primarily Lophelia species.
The final photo is of a black-bellied rose fish (Helicolenus
dactylopterus), which can live for 30 years or more.
