Ocean Explorer Expedition Education Modules (EEM) are designed to reach out in new ways to teachers, students, and the general public, and share the excitement of daily at-sea discoveries and the science behind NOAA’s major ocean exploration initiatives with the people around the world. The NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer 2013 Ship Shakedown expedition offers a unique opportunity to engage explorers of all ages as we begin a new field season of journeys to parts of our ocean planet that few have seen - the Submarine Canyons and Seamounts in the Western North Atlantic Ocean.
This EEM contains the following components:
A summary of why scientists and educators are interested in exploring this area and what we might learn from our efforts in this region as we strive to further understand the 95% of our planet that is virtually unexplored.
Introduction to Multibeam Sonar (pdf, 242 kb)
Educators and scientists working with NOAA developed a series of lesson plans for students in Grades 5 - 12 that are specifically tied to the mapping technology being used on this expedition.
Exploring LIVE with the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer (PDF, 169 kb)
Grade Level: 5-12 (Physical Science/Earth Science)
Focus: How students can become active ocean explorers while viewing live video feeds during Okeanos Explorer expeditions
Students learn how to access the Ocean Explorer website and access a live video feed of an Okeanos Explorer expedition; explore along with the ocean science community via live feeds during Okeanos Explorer expeditions; and learn how to track an expedition using the Okeanos Atlas.
Wet Maps (Grades 5-6)
Focus: Bathymetric mapping
Students analyze and interpret data to explain how multibeam sonar is used to identify patterns of ocean floor structures; construct three-dimensional maps; and understand how multibeam sonar technology extends the measurement and exploration capacity of modern ocean exploration. Mapping the Deep-ocean Floor (Grades 7-8)
Focus: Bathymetric mapping
Using EXCEL, students analyze and interpret data from the Okeanos Explorer to explain how multibeam sonar is used to identify patterns of ocean floor structures; and how multibeam sonar technology extends the measurement and exploration capacity of modern ocean exploration.
Watching in 3-D (Grades 9-12)
Focus: Multibeam sonar
Students explain how multibeam sonar uses the properties of sound waves in water for scientific research about topography of the ocean floor; and analyze and interpret multibeam sonar data using free iview4D software to identify patterns in the distribution of seafloor features that contribute to scientific research about large-scale interactions in Earth’s systems.
All lesson plans are correlated to:
A Framework for K-12 Science Education (in preparation for the Next Generation Science Standards );
Ocean Literacy Essential Principles and Fundamental Concepts ; and
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics where appropriate.
Standards Correlation Matrix: this matrix connects lessons to associated standards. Within the matrix Wet Maps is Lesson 3, Mapping the Deep-ocean Floor is Lesson 4, and Watching in 3-D is Lesson 5.
The NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer Education Materials Collection was developed to encourage educators and students to become personally involved with the voyages and discoveries of America’s first Federal ship dedicated to ocean exploration. The collection is presented in two volumes: Volume 1: Why Do We Explore? (modern reasons for ocean exploration) and Volume 2: How Do We Explore? (exploration methods and associated technologies).
